A remarkably young, 20-year-old architect named C. Emlen Urban designed this public school building in 1883. By age 23 he had designed 150 buildings from his office in Lancaster, according to a Lancaster newspaper of that time. He went on to become this area’s most-important, homegrown architect.
This school was for primary and secondary students. It was known as the Ann Street School. The public school closed in 1962. It later became a charter school named La Academia. Thanks to Deborah Oesch for sharing information about this school.
The front elevation has a pedimented, projecting central bay, a dentilled brick cornice, and segmental arches over double windows.
