"Old Town played host to a parade of magazine writers, urban planners, architects, historic district experts, and others from around the country who had heard about the phenomenon of Old Town." Quote: Intelligencer Journal newspaper, Sept. 6, 1986.
Most of the Old Town homes are historic houses with new interiors. A few homes are an exception because they are entirely new construction, including this home. The new houses were built by Gene Shaw, a home restoration specialist and founder of The Wooden Plane. The architect was Joan Fleckenstein, former board president of the Historic Preservation Trust.
Local investors created this award-winning Old Town redevelopment project in the 1970s and 80s after Lancaster city officials began to realize that rehabilitation of historic buildings was a valid alternative to demolishing those buildings for urban renewal.
