This attractive Second Empire home was built in 1872 - 1874 for the family of department-store owner Return E. Fahnestock. The architect was Edwin Forrest Durang of Philadelphia. The Fahnestock store eventually became Garvin’s Department Store on E. King Street.
It is a three-bay, stuccoed-brick house with a mansard roof, elaborate dormers, carved window caps, and a polygonal bay window. Modifications in the early 20th century include metal grills and a first-floor addition with a quadripartite window. Thanks to Deb Oesch for identifying this building’s architect.
