This monumental 1870s townhouse is one of the finest Lancaster houses of its decade. It was the home of the city’s leading wholesale grocer: John Ives Hartman and wife Elizabeth (Markley) Hartman. Mr. Hartman was also president of the Lancaster Trust Company.
The house is in the Second Empire style with a mansard roof and a polygonal bay topped with dormers. There is a central tower-like bay, and a southern bay with arched windows and a double-windowed dormer. Today the townhouse is a real estate office.
