In 1871 Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan designed this house on F&M College campus for the home of the president of Lancaster Theological Seminary, Rev. Dr. Emanuel V. Gerhart. He previously had been the first president of F&M College. Today this building is known as the Gerhart House.
Also in 1871 the architect designed a similar house on campus for seminary professor Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Apple. He previously had been president of Mercersburg College. In 1877 he became president of F&M College and continued living in that house. That building is today’s Huegel Alumni House.
In the 1870s Samuel Sloan also designed Harbaugh Hall which was the college’s first dormitory. At that time he also designed the Academy Building on campus for the prep-school. Harbaugh Hall and the Academy Building do not survive today.
Previously, in the 1850s, Samuel Sloan designed Lancaster’s Fulton Theater and the Lancaster County Courthouse.
